Overview

One of the defining experiences in any biker’s life unravels in Leh. Nestled in Northern India, the small town depicts the profoundness of nature and exhibits the sleek beauty of the great Himalayas. While this breathtaking desert town with precipitous roads has a special spot reserved in biking fanatics’ heart, it is also a land of rich culture, spiritual explorations, and some of the finest works of nature. From adventure enthusiasts to novices – the Leh to Zanskar route is the one for everyone.

Ride through stunning landscape, vibrant markets, and ancient monasteries on a power packed bike expedition. The Leh Zanskar trek itinerary with AdventuRush is here to fill eleven days of your calendar with some of the trickiest roads, magical peaks, an oasis of peace, and ultimately – a soul-satisfying experience.

  • Bike through the challenging terrains and high altitudes on the narrow roads of the edgy mountains.
  • Explore the hidden gems at Ladakh.
  • Feel the divinity and serenity of the turquoise Pangong lake.
  • Encounter mixed feelings of fear and excitement at every turn of the crazy roads.
  • Wake up to the calming sunrise adoring the lofty mountains.

Commence your trip from Leh, the starting point of the Zanskar tour package. Settle in at the hotel, and take some rest before you go exploring the local markets and must-visit sites. The Leh Market is a recommended location for a low-key evening of fun, culture and shopping. Acclimatize yourself to the chilling weather of Leh by devouring some of the eclectic delicacies, before returning to your cozy abode and preparing yourself for the adventure that awaits

Day 2 marks the beginning of your adventure-filled bike expedition. After waking up to a gladening morning, be ready and set to seize the scenic views while riding your bike from Leh to Lamayuru, experiencing the much-needed adrenaline rush of biking through uneven terrains. Whilst the ride, you will witness the majestic Magnetic Hills, the Zanskar-Indus River confluence, and the pious Gurudwara Pathhar Sahib. Once you reach Lamayuru, be prepared to get awestruck by the astounding monastery famous for its “lunar” landscape. Filled with spectacular views and situated at 3,510 meters, it is also called the “Moonland” because of its terrain resembling the moon’s surface. After the long day, you will interlude for the night at a comfortable homestay to prepare for the next day’s adventure.

An exhilarating first Zanskar road trip day it was, wasn’t it? After reaching and spending the beautiful night at Lamayuru, wake up to a new morning that gears you up for the demanding long-distance route to Padum via Wanla, Sirsir La, Shingle La, and Murgum La. This route encompasses undulating landscapes and plunges through small hamlets built along the stretch to cater to the passing tourists. After reaching Shingle La, be wise with the brakes as you will head on a continuous downhill from a height of 5056m. On your way, you will also pass through the Hanuma La Pass and Parfi La Pass, and see the beautiful Lingshed monastery, a bewitching structure built in an otherwise desolate stretch of land.

On reaching Padum after a comfortable night’s sleep at your homestay, we go on an exploration hike to the Sani Lake and seek a hidden monastery in the region.

Day 4 brings to you, a day of traversing through the panoramic landscape of the Ladakh hills to touchdown Purne, a small and dainty village located at the height of 3950m in the Zanskar valley. This day is one of the most monumental ones in the Zanskar bike trip since it ends with us roving up the hills to explore the world-famous Phuktal Monastery.

Upon reaching Purne, enjoy the soft, deep sand, rubble, and stones while having hot tea on the banks of the Tsarap river, before you retire to your lodging for a peaceful night’s sleep.

After being enticed by the Phuktal monastery in your Leh Zanskar trip, you will carry on the biking journey to Jispa via Shinku La. Driving up the Shinku La stretch to Jispa is audacious as the tarmac road peters down soon enough. It will be the most extreme day as you will find yourself riding over rugged rocks and loose gravel. This stretch introduces you to the most inhospitable part of the region, where the sun falls down hard, and the air is very lean. The mountains are primarily barren; all you can see is rust-colored lichen, reddish-brown grass, and no hint of greenery. Nevertheless, the journey ends with us reaching Jispa, a small village housing only 78 households, just in time to immerse yourself in the solace of mountains at the height of 3,200m.

After spending the day at Jispa, relish a hearty breakfast, and explore the tiny town with a helipad, a post office, and a monastery, let’s recommence with the Zanskar road trip to Tsokar via Sarchu, Naki La, Lachalung la, and Baralacha La. In the first high-altitude segment of this day, you will reach the town of Sarchu, an alluring tourist destination located at 4,290m. Witness a stunning view of the snow-endowed mountains and the Suraj Tal. Moving to Baralacha La, north of Sarchu, experience a poised drive through the plateau with multitudinous hairpin bends. After the circuitous journey, you ultimately reach the alluring Tsokar lake. Known as the “White Lake ” because of its white salt deposits, it is credited with supporting the Changpa Nomads’ salt industry, allowing it to facilitate trade with merchants from the rest of Ladakh.

The 8th day of your Zanskar trip covers the remaining distance from Tsokar to Hanle, an eccentric route leading the tour to a remarkable climax. Begin this segment after a fulfilling and refreshing breakfast at the banks of Tsokar and take off alongside the white lake to Hanle, a village with historical remains and the highest astronomical observatory in the world. Leaving the lake, you will come across the multi-colored Kar Lake and tread along the Changthang plateau. On reaching Hanle, lodge into a comfortable stay after a demanding yet fulfilling day of bike ride through the immaculate mountains of Ladakh.

After exploring the observatory at Hanle, it is an excellent opportunity to take a little detour to Umling La Pass as a closing biking expedition in your Zanskar trip that has been nothing but extraordinary. Gear up to experience this pass as you embark on the route to the Umling La Pass, located at 5,798m. You will cross the Chisumle Bridge along the Kingdul River while ascending down the Chismule-Demchok road in a deep valley.

We have distinctively added this detour, an enthralling experience to give you the much-needed opportunity to ride your bike on one of the highest motorable passes in the world, making this package one of the best Zanskar valley tour packages you could have.

Hanle is the last pitstop of this Zanskar road trip. After a cozy night at a modest stay, begin your journey back to the base, Leh. As you journey back to Leh, covering more than 250 km, you will witness the views and the grandeur of Ladakh’s eternal glory for the last time in this bike expedition.

Coming down to Loma after riding through the Changthang plateau, sit and relax at the banks of the charming Indus River valley. After hours of riding down the dusty earthen roads we touch down Leh for an overnight stay, and rejuvenation.

The eleventh day marks the end of your remarkable journey from Leh to Zanskar and back to Leh after witnessing the divine mountains of this region. Bid adieu to the beautiful town of Leh with a suitcase full of memories, scenic views, and the personal accomplishments as a biker, as you head back to your homes.
