Overview

Once-in-a-lifetime experience of walking on a frozen Lake. The Chadar trek is one of the most difficult, exciting, and worthy trek with the thrill of walking on crystal clear Ice. It is an 8-day trek and one of the longest treks with a distance of 52 km. It takes place in the coldest months of the year, January to February. Experience the exotic vistas of frozen waterfalls get a glance at the tough yet homely culture of Zanskar villages and get mesmerized by the unmatched beauty of snow-capped mountains, frozen waterfalls, and the great Zanskar lake frozen still in time.

  • Witness the beauty of Ladakh, the monasteries, the mountains all wrapped in the cold embrace of snow in freezing temperature.

  • Explore the untouched, secluded villages of Naerak.

  • Begin your Chadar trek by arriving in Leh. If you are arriving by road, it is advisable to keep
    enough warm clothes as there will be a significant altitude drop. After reaching Leh, head to your pre-booked stay. Have dinner and an overnight stay at the guest house.

  • Wake up to a chilly morning and enjoy some delicious breakfast. Today you will be exploring Leh on foot as it is very important for acclimatization of your body to a higher altitude. Take a stroll through the market or visit the Shanti Stupa. Spend the rest of your day leisurely and head to bed early.

  • On the third day of your Chadar Trek, you will be undertaking a Preliminary Medical Checkup near the ALTOA office at Leh Market. Once deemed fit, you will get a green signal to go ahead with the trek from tomorrow.

  • Begin your trek day with a hearty breakfast in the morning and enjoy a 75 kms drive to
    Shingra Koma. Witness the curvy bends of the road surrounding high mountains as you
    cross the small villages. After reaching, carry your luggage and start trekking towards Somo
    Paldar Campsite. This will be your first experience of walking on the frozen Zanskar of this trek. Take slow steps and use your walking stick to check the steadiness of the ice. You may
    slip in the initial stages so walk carefully. The trek distance is 3 kms and it will take you 2.5 hours to reach at the campsite. Get freshened up, relax for a while and head to bed after dinner.

  • Start your day with a hot cup of tea and breakfast. Today you will be witnessing the raw
    beauty of Zanskar in all its elements of Ravines and Gorges. Get mesmerized by the stunning views of frozen waterfall. Yes, you read it right, a waterfall, frozen in time. Take a halt and
    have lunch on your way. Keep walking till you see dry sand on the trail, wherein your tents
    will be pitched at Dib Cave. Enjoy an overnight stay in the cold embrace of Zanskar.

  • Today is the day that will become a fond memory of this trek as you will get to witness a
    magical view of the largest frozen waterfall. The trail leading to the waterfall is marked with praying flags on the trees along the way. Naerak waterfall involves very interesting folklore relating its origin from the Kailasha Parvata. Let the locals tell you about this mystic yet
    beautiful waterfall. Take a halt for pictures at the Bridge situated near the waterfall and head to the village of Naerak to have a glimpse of the Zanskari lifestyle. Have an overnight stay at the village campsite followed by dinner.

  • After having breakfast at the village campsite, you will start descending to Tibb Cave. It is also used for estranged trekkers for a covered night stay to prevent them from freezing. This
    serene piece of nature offers ecstatic views of sun-kissed mountains. After reaching Tibb
    Cave, pitch your tents and have an overnight stay.

  • Get up in the morning and bid goodbye to the surreal Tibb Cave. Today, after breakfast, you
    will trek back to Shingra Koma via Gyalpo. This trail offers an exciting chance to cross
    through the homes of some mountain wild animals like Snow Leopards, Ibex and Foxes, you may spot a leopard if you are lucky enough. After reaching Shingra Koma, you will be transferred to Leh in a shared vehicle. After arriving at the hotel, check-in and relax for the day. Overnight stay at the hotel.

  • Today is the last day of your Chadar trek, after having breakfast, pack your bags and bid
    farewell to your new friends, gather all your memories within your heart and start your
    return journey back home.

  • As per the Ladakh Tour operator association - Wildlife department permits, Adventure Insurance and Medical Checkup fees i.e. INR 8,500 will have to be paid by the participant on-ground to the local association.
  • Clearing the Medical fitness check done by Ladakh tour operators association in Leh is mandatory to continue on the trek , Any additional expensed incurred if the medical check is not cleared will have to be borne by the participant.
  • This trek covers locations based on high altitude and not recommended for people with asthma or other breathing concerns. This trek requires prior trekking experience.
  • This trek is not recommended for beginners and requires prior experience of trekking.
  • Keeping your safety first, if the weather is poor, or the Chadar is not frozen, the tour operator will suggest the best alternative possible. It is likely to happen that there will be a change in the itinerary.
  • Please carry an ID proof and passport size photo (PAN card will not be considered as a valid address proof).
  • Kindly read all sections in attachment to know more about the trip.
  • Kindly pay full attention to the briefing provided and follow all guidelines as recommended.
  • Trekking is to immerse oneself in nature, so please expect basic facilities.
  • Electricity will not be available after Leh.
  • Package includes vegetarian meals only.

Each booking allows for a maximum of two rescheduling opportunities. After which, no further changes can be made to the booking.

Any price differences resulting from rescheduling, such as changes in seasonal rates or availability, will be applicable and will be communicated to the customer during the rescheduling process.

In the event that a customer requests a rescheduling but fails to attend the newly scheduled appointment, it will be considered a missed appointment, and our standard cancellation policy will apply

  • The season for Chadar Trek arrives in January and ends in the first week of February.

 

  • The starting point for this trek is Leh. You can reach Leh by air or by road.  

    

  • The highest altitude of Chadar trek is 11,400 ft above sea level.  

 

  • Please read the “What to carry” section on the product details page.  

  • The difficulty level for this trek is difficult. The highest altitude is 11,400 ft. The total distance covered is 105 kms. This is a physically draining trek and is not recommended for beginners. A prior experience of high altitude of atleast 13000 ft is required to participate. Participants with any heart condition, Asthma or Blood pressure are not recommended to go for this trek.  The trekker must be physically fit and should be able to carry 15-20 kgs of weight. This trek is done in the peak winter season and will require good resistance to extreme cold weather.  

 

  • This is a Difficult trek, morning jogs and running 30 days before the trip will be helpful during the trek. If you are an experienced trekker, then only you can go for this trek. One should have the strength to carry 12-15 kgs of weight in backpack and be able to walk at higher altitude in minus 30-degree temperature.  
  • To gain stamina, you can try Cardio and running along with stretching every day to strengthen your muscles and work on your flexibility. Since it is a physically endearing trek, strength training will also help along with HIIT workouts. 

  • The Chadar trek is operational for only a month and while you are on the trek, it is possible that you are unable to reach the next campsite as the weather keeps on changing at a fast pace and the Chadar may get broken in the middle. In such cases, there may be a delay in completing the trek and you are advised to keep a buffer of 2-3 days. Also, any cost incurred due to extreme weather conditions will be borne by the traveler. In case the trek is cancelled while you are on the trip, the tour operator will suggest the best alternative possible.  

  • The total trek distance is 62 kms to be covered in 8 days.  

 

  • In case you are sick and not able to complete the trek, you will be sent down to the base camp depending on the circumstances. Kindly note that a refund or reschedule for the same is not applicable. Any extra expenses incurred during this transfer will be borne by the traveler.

  • Full Refund- If cancelled before 7 days before scheduled departure. 
  • No Refund- If cancelled by the customer in less than 7 days before scheduled departure. 
  • If participants are unable to or refuse to go through with the experience at site, no refund will be applicable.

 

  • The payment policy is 100% at the time of booking. 

  • Refunds are subjected to the cancellation policies. All refunds will be processed in 10 business days to the source account. 

  • In case of extreme bad weather, government restriction or political disturbance, if any activity is cancelled, then the operator will suggest the best possible alternative. However, a cash refund is not applicable. In case of a change in itinerary due to weather, any additional expenses will be borne by the traveler.
